CHAPTER TEN

Chapter-10

“You’re going the wrong way,” Elle growled, sitting up straighter in the seat of his old truck.

His hands tightened on the wheel, but he didn’t slow down. “How were you planning on getting across the border?”

Elle’s mouth tightened. “Use my badge?”

“Doesn’t mean anything to border crossing patrol. Try again.”

“Thousands cross the border into the US everyday. How hard can it be to cross back into Mexico the same way?”

“Harder then you think. Mexican government isn’t concerned with its people leaving, less mouths to feed. But they aren’t too keen on letting nosy Americans come in illegally. Interferes with the drug trade.”

Elle glared at him. “You don’t know that.” She muttered. “I’d have figured it out.”

“Maybe, but there’s a better way. We could go in legally.”

Her brows shot north. “What are you talking about?”

“We need passports and a good cover.”

She stared at him suspiciously. “Keep talking.”

“I have this friend, and we’re going to pay him a visit on the way, pick up a few things. I just need to know, are you feeling photogenic?”

She rolled her eyes and snorted. “Not particularly, no.”

“Just be careful and take your cues from me when we get there. Clyde can be a little tetchy about visitors. Hopefully I can even find him.”

“I thought you knew where he lived?”

“Well, approximately. Unless he’s moved his bug-out shelter again. He does that periodically to keep people like us out.”

She shot him a skeptical look. “Sounds a real peach. What reason does a guy like that have to help us? He sounds like some nut.”

“True enough, but Clyde has a weakness.”

“Money...” Elle guessed.

Jacob smiled and nodded towards the glove-compartment. “Go on, open it up.”

She did, and jerked when several packages tumbled onto the floor. She picked one up, mouth falling open in confusion. “This is licorice, what the hell?”

“Yup. He doesn’t have much use for money. Man has a real sweet tooth, though, and he doesn’t get to town often.”

Elle reached out and grabbed the door and dash when they abruptly turned off the road down a barely visible track that looked like it led straight into the middle of the woods. “What the...” she snapped, teeth jarring over a particularly nasty hole that had her bouncing several inches sideways in her seat.

“Hold on, this is where it gets rough.” He reached down and slid the gear into 4-wheel drive.

Fifteen minutes later when she was sure her head was going to split apart, they pulled into a small opening in the middle of nowhere. She frowned. There was no house, no vehicle, and no outbuildings. No sign of human habitation anywhere.

“I think he moved.”

Jacob shut the engine and stared out and around through the window. “Maybe.”

He pocketed the keys and reached for the door.

Elle followed, joining him at the front of the truck, the sound of the engine cooling down a soft rumble of complaint under the hood.

“What are you looking for, maybe I can help?” Elle asked doubtfully.

He didn’t answer, moving towards a short ridge that dropped away into a steep gully where the only the tops of the trees at the bottom showed.
